In Sunday’s sermon on John 18:28-40, entitled What is Truth?, we found that the answer John’s gospel gives to this question is that Jesus is truth and the word of God is truth.  As I was thinking about this later in the day, the thought occurred that perhaps there were other truths as well, such as 2+2=4 and other well-established facts that are true.  And then I remembered the prologue to John’s gospel, where it says, “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing has been made that was made.”  So what we see here in the gospel of John is a pointer toward that well-worn phrase,  “All truth is God’s truth.”  Truth really is found in Jesus because Jesus created all things and therefore set into place those laws and realities which govern our existence.  So all truth finds its foundations in Jesus.  So when we say, “Jesus is the truth” we really mean it, and we mean it in a comprehensive way.  We don’t compartmentalize Jesus into a religious or spiritual sphere.  And when we stop compartmentalizing Him, then we begin to see that He is Lord over all of life.  I don’t have a church life and an everyday life, Jesus is over all and He rules over and in all truth.  This makes all of learning into worship, because when I am learning I am simply uncovering the truths that Jesus the Truth has put into the universe.

  1. Objective Science truth, real office truth, genuine marriage and family truth, positively good recreation and entertainment truth, modest dress and vision truth, clean speech and laughter truth…………..

  2. I love the fact that the question so many people in the world today, “What is truth?” is found right in the pages of the Bible. Found that out during my year of reading the gospels through each month. Bible reading is so enlightening.

  3. Yes, Noel, that’s it.

Brian, systematic Bible reading is great. This is also one of the reasons I value expository preaching through books of the Bible. I doubt we would have seen John’s answer to the question if I had just decided to preach on chapter 18 alone. But because we have been working our way through John as a church off and on for the last three years, the connections were very plain.

  4. Yep, expository preaching is the best. That’s how I was taught. Have a great week.
